Overview and Purpose of Wiki
This wiki has been established by the NOAA Global Earth Observation -- Integrated Data Environment (GEO-IDE) per the recommendation stated in Section 8 (Page 51) of the Project CONOPS: “To assist program and project managers, NOAA's Data Management Integration Team DMIT recommends that a NOAA Guide on Integrated Information Management be developed. The Guide is intended to help NOAA program and project managers find resources needed to help write detailed implementation plans for their programs that conform to GEO-IDE recommendations. These resources include NOAA data management policies and guidelines, an inventory of data systems, relevant NOAA, national, and international standards, and recommendations for developing data management plans.”

The GEO-IDE Concept of Operations defines an initial set of structural data types that are used in many NOAA data systems. The Standards Working Group will use these data types to focus discussions of potential NOAA standards.

Standards and standards processes
- The DMIT Standards Working Group provides information about the "fast track" standards proposed in the GEO-IDE Implementation Plan as well as the GEO-IDE Standards White Paper.
- NOAA is a Principal Member of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). To help coordinate NOAA's inputs to the OGC process a NOAA OGC Interest Group has been established and is being led by Jason Marshall. Please contact Jason if you would like to be added to the mailing list for this group.
- NASA's Standards Process Group (SPG) has a well established process that NASA uses for evaluating standards in the Earth science domain. The SPG website provides a list of the standards that have been reviewed. Also of potential interest to NOAA data managers are the various technical notes and lessons learned documents that are posted on this site including some Draft Technical Notes that are currently under review.
- The purpose of the GEOSS Standards and Interoperability Forum (SIF) is to provide advice, expertise and impartial guidance on issues relating to standards and interoperability for GEOSS. The goal of the SIF is to enable ever greater degrees of interoperability among GEOSS components through facilitation, technical analysis, advocacy and education.
- The IOOS Data Management and Communications Standards Process is another data standards review and approval process.
- The National Environmental Information Exchange Network, a partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, State Environmental Agencies, and Tribes for exchanging environmental management information has a data standards process and list of standards as well.
- NOAA's Procedure for Scientific Records Appraisal and Archive Approval provides an overview, targeted at data users and producers, on how NOAA decides what information to preserve in an a NOAA archive.
- Full details regarding NOAA's Procedure for Scientific Records Appraisal and Archive Approval provides detailed information, targeted at data managers, on the procedure that NOAA will use to identify, appraise, and decide what scientific records are preserved in a NOAA archive. The procedure applies to accepting or rejecting newly acquired scientific records for a NOAA archive and also to retaining or disposing of existing records already held in a NOAA archive.

- The IEOS Web Services Architecture is a technical resource compiled by the Data and Architecture Committee of the U.S. Group on Earth Observations.
- The IOOS DIF DATA PROVIDER GUIDE provides information about the web services being utilized as part of the IOOS Data Integration Framework.
- The IOOS Data Integration Framework (DIF) project is developing an IOOS DIF DATA PROVIDER GUIDE that describes how the DIF is being implemented and provides guidance and "cookbooks" on various DIF implementations underway in the various IOOS regions.
- NOAA's Data Management Integration Team (DMIT) is in the process of developing a GEO-IDE Project Action Plan for FY 2010 to develop a prototype implementation of a cross-NOAA gridded dataset integration capability. Please see the Overview and benefits of the GEO-IDE UAF Grid Project.
